The YKQ-2421, sometimes colloquially known as the Anomalous Expanse after the region of space it occupies, is a government located coreward within Sector A1-0. The YKQ-2421's nickname comes from the numerous anomalies in the area that make the area more hazardous to traverse even for the region's native inhabitants, with space in the region sometimes warping into pockets and folds where space expands in one area and contracting within another - while this mostly presents navigational issues throughout most of the Anomalous Expanse with little impact on the numerous places where people live, ranging from interstellar habitat clusters to star systems, the most extreme anomalous areas can be found around the border of the YKQ-2421 with the nearby Badlands. These areas are uninhabited due to temporarily stable bubbles and folds within the region being able to temporarily envelop entire star systems, making them incredibly difficult to enter. Anomalies these large eventually dissipate, but are considered dangerous enough that effectively no permanent population lives next to the Badlands.
The YKQ-2421 as a political entity is structured into 20 primary subdivisions - 7 countries, 10 provinces, 2 territories, and a single uninhabitable zone next to the Badlands. The inhabitants of these areas (sans the uninhabitable zone, which nobody lives in) are members of two species - the robotic Qelua, and the organic Ykate. While having spread out from a single homeworld, with the Ykate being the creators of the Qelua as a species, the homeworld and home system of both species is completely missing, with most archaeological evidence pointing to the homeworld having been somewhere near the Asvac system in the Badlands - however, due to the exotic ways in which space-time is warped in the Badlands, the general consensus is that the warping of space-time in the region in the best case has likely warped the homeworld into being uninhabitable, or in the worst cases, destroyed it entirely. Each of these subdivisions serves a different purpose, and have subdivisions of their own - countries preside over the most populated areas of the YKQ-2421, provinces preside over more sparsely inhabited space that is nonetheless still populated, the two territories preside over space with extremely sparse populations where swathes of systems may only be inhabited by a few million people in total, and the uninhabitable zone exists to demarcate parts of space that are too dangerous for permanent inhabitation under any present circumstance. Every single country, province, and territory elects a kaale (councillor) to represent their subdivision, who then joins the YKQ-2421 ae Chtok Kaal (Federal Council of the YKQ-2421) as a head of state, voting on matters related to governance of the YKQ-2421. However, due to the difficulty of traversing space, the YKQ-2421 government is often loose in its authority, with quite a few segments of space being lawless, and essentially relying on dedication to the YKQ-2421's ideals as their main connection to the rest of the YKQ-2421.
Etymology
YKQ-2421 is the roughly transliterated form of an ancient serial number found across the numerous star systems in the YKQ-2421. Believed to have been a logo for some kind of important service related to interstellar expansion from thousands of years ago, it has generally been adopted as a symbol of unity between the numerous star systems as well as a symbol of unity between the Qelua and Ykate species, with it having often been used by numerous groups as a symbol representing peaceful coexistence prior to the establishment of the YKQ-2421 as a political entity. In the hundreds of years since the establishment of the YKQ-2421 as a government, the serial number has come to be seen as a symbol of the YKQ-2421 government and its ideals more than anything else.
History
Proto YKQ-2421 Period
The Proto YKQ-2421 period is the part of the YKQ-2421's history that the least is known about, thanks to many ancient archives having had the data within be permanently lost to the decay of infrastructure over time as many societies focused on survival rather than the preservation of their history, and in many cases did not have the means to continue maintaining these massive archives without outside support. What is known is that somewhere near the Asvac system, the Ykate evolved on what has been pieced together to have likely been an arid and hot planet based on the conditions numerous worlds within the YKQ-2421 were terraformed to, and at some point started developing AI that split into two different branches - the bodyless Qelua-Tei, and all other Qelua - embodied AIs. This civilization then spread throughout space and gradually developed the means to terraform worlds, created ecumenopoli, and even created Dyson Ring Swarms to harness the energy of stars. This civilization lasted from around 15300 BTT to around 13900 BTT - its collapse has been observed as being gradual thanks to an unexplained increase in space-time anomalies, eventually resulting in a sharp increase that led to the space between systems becoming essentially impossible to transit with the realspace drives they had, leading to its collapse as systems were cut off from one another. This sharp increase in anomalies was followed by a steady decline, eventually reaching present day levels across the Anomalous Expanse by ~11000 BTT to ~9000 BTT.
Survival Period
The Survival Period immediately followed the Proto YKQ-2421 period, and was marked by most of the worlds of the proto YKQ-2421 civilization being forced to become self-reliant. While no star systems ever truly regressed to the point of abandoning all but the most basic of technologies, many instead kept around the numerous machines of the proto YKQ-2421 civilization that were absolutely necessary maintained, having little ability to recreate these machines, making them extremely valuable resources. On other worlds, technology often reverted to barely industrial technologies, and only on a select few worlds did they mostly maintain the technology they had. Even then, many of these societies entered long periods of technological stasis where no major technological advancements were made or forgotten, eventually entering periods of advancement before entering stasis yet again. Asaii and Cavaa in the Asvac system are two planets notable for entering periods of technological stasis, maintaining advanced technology relative to other worlds but usually not bothering to improve on it as it was viewed as sufficient for survival, maintaining many social institutions (at least early on) from the proto YKQ-2421 civilization. Frontier worlds such as Gylith in the Ythalo'ka system and Tuujas in the Valtuu system, however, often reverted to barely industrial technologies and gradually rebuilt their technological bases as time passed.
Rebuilding Period
The Rebuilding Period is generally considered to have begun when basic space travel began to be re-discovered across the Anomalous Expanse's star systems, assuming they ever lost their knowledge of said technology in the first place. Beginning to reach out into space yet again and often having societies in the information age, many of these societies began to discover remnants of the proto YKQ-2421 civilization across their star systems, and began to become more interconnected as varying intranets and internets were invented. This time period also heralded change - both good and bad. While worlds such as Tuujas and Tuumec in the Valtuu system and the original habitats of the Akrril Habitat Complex began re-establishing contact with one another and worked together to build a better system for the people in general, others such as the inhabitants of Tas-ch-mev in the Ya-ve-mas system nearly wiped each other out in nuclear warfare and the numerous wars on the moon Beket that scarred the lunar surface in the Temuke-Sajchea system. This time period is also infamously when the Ykate living on Gylith began to oppress the Qelua living on Gylith more ruthlessly.
The Interstellar Period
The Interstellar Period is the period when realspace drives began to be re-invented across the Anomalous Expanse. The Asvac and Valtuu systems respectively became united under the singular political entities of the Asvac League, which relied on a planned economy, and the Twin Worlds, which relied on a market-based economy - primarily Qelua revolutionaries overthrew their Ykate oppressors in the Ythalo'ka system, and society on Tas-ch-mev began rebuilding their technological bases as religions quickly developed revering the advanced technologies of their old world. Thanks to Asvac and Valtuu reinventing the realspace drive first in the region in 645 BTT, and the Twin Worlds second in 621 BTT, the Asvac League and the Twin Worlds quickly expanded across the stars, making first contact with numerous smaller societies and convincing them to join each government or establishing colonies on uninhabited worlds in uninhabited systems. However, this eventually resulted in the Asvac League and the Twin Worlds making first contact - thanks to disagreements over how economies should be structured, both these governments entered a cold war wherein they tried to garner influence with other star systems and prove what they considered to be the superiority of their respective economic models. Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the Temuke-Sajchea system expanded outward beyond their home moons - the arid moon Beket and the oceanic moon Asamecii - and into their star systems and eventually the stars, notably as separate political entities that nonetheless had friendly political relations with each other. They too garnered the support of smaller societies, but instead formed alliances with them without annexation, resulting in quite diverse cultural landscapes. Even more isolated systems such as the Akrril Habitat Complex, Ythalo'ka, and Ya-ve-mas began to send people into distant stars, with Ya-ve-mas' political entities having been given the realspace drive by the Asvac League, seeing potential in some of the tribes and nations on Tas-ch-mev due to them having somewhat similar societal standards and living in a star system with a dyson ring swarm, pulling them into the cold war between the Twin Worlds and the Asvac League and resulting in the powers on Tas-ch-mev choosing to stay neutral in the conflict.
This time period began to come to a close when the YKQ-2421 serial number was discovered, resulting in propositions for international archaeological expeditions to uncover more secrets of the ancient civilization that created this serial number - and to promote international cooperation, as tensions were beginning to reach boiling point. These archaeological expeditions uncovered previously unknown history, and were proof the varying star-faring worlds of the Anomalous Expanse could all work together for the common good - a surprising peace existed between the various teams of archaeologists as they uncovered their shared history. The lack of animosity between these numerous societies in their joint efforts eventually led to the proposal of an intranational organization that could promote cooperation.
In 432 BTT, it was established, becoming known as the YKQ-2421.
The YKQ-2421 Period
The YKQ-2421 Period initially began with the founding of the YKQ-2421 as an international organization. However, the organization swiftly began to gain more and more power as they established a single currency, the ykare/credit, and mediated disputes between varying political powers, eventually resulting in the YKQ-2421 slowly coalescing as a proper interstellar nation. Each of the founding members of the YKQ-2421 were made into (or merged into, in some cases) countries, outer territories belonging to said powers became provinces, and the most disparate space became territories. YKQ-2421 Basic/akehYKQ-2421 was eventually established as an official language, and the YKQ-0001 system was eventually colonized with the expressed purpose of being the capital due to its position as being in the middle of the Anomalous Expanse, with massive habitats with excellent living conditions being established on the planet 2421-Iaves alongside incentives to immigrate to the planet causing 2421-Iaves to eventually be considered a country in its own right.
However, just because the YKQ-2421 says they preside over their territory does not mean they actually do. Many more remote areas in the territories (and in some cases, the provinces) are too challenging to reach for YKQ-2421 officials, resulting in them acting essentially independently of the YKQ-2421 and only holding ideals in common with the YKQ-2421 rather than actual governing structure. Some star systems became home to pirates preying upon weaker flotillas, others became home to members of the Asvac League and the Twin Worlds who never stopped fighting, and others still were home to distinct societies forming that often had to deal with a lack of reliable communication with the rest of the YKQ-2421, but were still members of it, creating "anomalous frontiers" that were and still are somewhat lawless.
On top of that, the YKQ-2421 has begun sending exploration fleets into the unknown stars surrounding the Anomalous Expanse that are safe to travel into - as regional conflicts have become far less of an issue, the YKQ-2421 is more free to explore nearby space than it has been before.
Galactography
The YKQ-2421, while relatively small, can be divided into different areas based on the subdivisions of the YKQ-2421 that exist - relatively small also does not necessarily mean it actually is small, as around 310,000 stars exist in the Anomalous Expanse, with approximately 493,000 planets and moons existing in the region - not all of which are inhabited. Even inhabited systems can range from populations in the trillions to as small as only a few thousand inhabitants.
The Countries
The Countries are the most heavily populated areas of the YKQ-2421 and are home to a majority of the population of the YKQ-2421. Being the most well-developed and centralized, they each have one system as their capital system, which the most traffic is usually in, and are populated by trillions of people, ranging from Ykate and embodied Qelua living on planets to the disembodied Qelua-Tei living in orbital clusters of processors and belt-like swarms of habitats and processors. Habitats in space aren't uncommon at all in these systems, and some activity from nomad space-faring groups exists here as well.
- The Asvac League (Asvac Velossk.) Capital system is Asvac.
- The Twin Worlds (RaamakTec.) Capital system is Valtuu.
- The Ya-ve-mas Unity (Resh-ka Ya-ve-mas.) Capital system is Ya-ve-mas.
- The YKQ-0001 Federation (Kaalec YKQ-0001.) Capital system is YKQ-0001.
- The Republic of Equality (Ahta'et'baj.) Capital system is Ythalo'ka
- The Interstellar Coalition of Peoples (Oriiaehde k Ceda.) Capital system is Temuke-Sajchea
- The Shield (at-Ris.) Capital system is the Akrril Habitat Complex
The Provinces
The Provinces are the less united areas of the YKQ-2421, lacking capitals and often originating from varying colonies and smaller native societies that often didn't have much interest into expanding further into space coalescing together into a larger society. While still developed, YKQ-2421 law is less prevalent away from the larger systems, with provincial laws instead taking hold due to Provinces being autonomous. A few trillion people are scattered in these systems, ranging from billions of people to millions of people on a world or processor cluster, and nomadic space-faring groups aren't particularly uncommon in these areas. Megastructures also generally are not present in these areas asides from swarms of processors that form belts around stars and planets.
- The Neutral Worlds. Exists between the Asvac League and the Twin Worlds as a coalition of systems that were caught between the League and the Twin Worlds during their cold war, ranging from isolated colonies of the superpowers to smaller societies native to the area. It's often stated that the Neutral Worlds were historically the graveyard of the superpowers - given that the Twin Worlds as a whole never fully sided with either the Asvac League or the Twin Worlds, and was able to outright fight back against them if they tried to aggressively expand, those who state that have a point.
- The Outer Realms. Exists next to the Ya-ve-mas Unity due to having formed as a loose league of worlds that originated from colonization attempts by the inhabitants of Ya-ve-mas, the main reason they filed for being a province rather than being a part of the Ya-ve-mas Unity is due to the environments of space and the peopling thereof having caused them to drastically diverge in culture from their ancestors on Ya-ve-mas, namely in having become much more irreligious to the point where atheism and agnosticism (or equivalents thereof) aren't uncommon in the Outer Realms.
- The Free Reaches. Bordering the Asvac League, YKQ-0001 Federation, and Ya-ve-mas Unity, this province is mostly inhabited by native societies that simply wanted nothing to do with the cold war between the Asvac League and Twin Worlds, but didn't have the firepower or population to be individually powerful. Many of the Free Reaches worlds are more directly overseen by the YKQ-2421, making them effectively indistinguishable from the nearby Countries, with the boundaries between these worlds and the Countries being more of a gradient.
- The YKQ-0001 Rim. This area of space was completely uninhabited before the establishment of colonies in the 2421-Iaves system, but is currently densely populated as many of the inhabitants of the YKQ-0001 Federation try to establish new homes, making the area somewhat similar to the YKQ-0001 Federation, albeit more sparsely populated than the Federation proper. However, due to the newness of the Rim, this area generally operates under provincial law due to the YKQ-2421 attempting to encourage the development of these worlds quickly while simultaneously paying more attention to other affairs - many politicians in the Rim also seek to simply just unite their province with the YKQ-0001 Federation proper.
- The Unchained Systems. Neighbouring the Republic of Equality, these formerly uninhabited worlds were settled by formerly enslaved Qelua who sought to make sure they would never be under an oppressive yoke similar to that which was on Gylith ever again - the Unchained Systems have been successful in this endeavour, with the Unchained Systems also being some of the most loyal to the YKQ-2421 despite having large provincial fleets as they are mostly populated by Qelua-Kye and Qelua-Tei - Qelua that look nothing like a Ykate, and virtual Qelua respectively, both groups being some of the most disadvantaged Qelua in the bad old days on Gylith.
- The Coalition-Republic Worlds. Located between the Republic of Equality and the Interstellar Coalition of Peoples, these worlds were uninhabited prior to the arrival of colonists, with the colonists of the Coalition and the Republic intermingling and eventually developing shared cultural customs, becoming their own distinct group of cultures. These worlds generally tend to maintain their own militias to protect their homes, but comply with YKQ-2421 law and frequently utilize the YKQ-2421's laws rather than any provincial ones.
- The Homeward Reaches. Comprised mostly of numerous native societies across many different worlds, these worlds generally tended to have more intact infrastructure from the proto YKQ-2421 civilization, making them have a far stronger technological base than other worlds - as a result, the Homeward Reaches are a forefront in technological development, with many of the YKQ-2421's current advances being made in them. These worlds are also more densely populated than many of the other Provincial worlds due to their technological bases having often survived, allowing for more diseases - biological and digital - to be cured.
- The Calm Front. The Calm Front is so named after the fewer anomalies in the area, making space travel relatively easy there in its coreward areas compared to the rest of the YKQ-2421. The primarily Coalition-colonized province is also one of the most sparsely populated and simultaneously militarized - the Calm Front often acts like its own country, having its own laws, with its military and defenses being a high priority to make up for the lack of a natural "terrain" advantage in the area.
- The Habitat Networks. Comprised primarily of habitats, processor swarms, and nomadic flotillas, the Habitat Networks have their own distinct culture, both from the Coalition and the Shield, focusing on living in outer space rather than on any planetary or even lunar body. Many of the inhabitants of the Habitat Networks are tall and spindly and have had their physiologies (if they possess any body at all) changed by the lack of gravity and altered to be more compatible with zero-G. That the Habitat Networks are primarily off-world means that the Networks also tend to maintain their own laws with assistance from the Shield and Interstellar Coalition in doing so. The Calm Front's military is also allowed to operate at the calmer coreward edges of the Networks.
- The Farthest Networks. Comprised primarily of habitats, similarly to the Habitat Networks, the Farthest networks are named after them being on the edge of YKQ-2421 space. While the Calm Front's military is allowed to patrol in the Province, the Farthest Networks generally tend to be far more interested in maintaining their own habitats, attempting to create unique ecosystems adapted to space and supporting research in genetic modification. The Farthest Networks also have their own fleet, specifically to defend it from any attacks that could happen to it from elsewhere.
The Territories
The Territories are parts of space so sparsely inhabited that the YKQ-2421 doesn't have much in the way of governing it. While routes through them are protected by the et-Ekii, these routes are often barely inhabited in their own right. Only around 15 billion or so people live in either territory, with most sticking to the routes - outside the routes, however, are where pirates operate, alongside isolated military cells and isolated worlds following the YKQ-2421's laws out of dedication to its ideals rather than any necessity.
- The Rimward Territories. These territories are less the realm of pirates and more the realm of isolated groups - each often sticking to their own worlds, having little contact with anyone outside their systems. Notably, Twin Worlds and Asvac League remnant cells exist here - they often carry on laws from their respective governments from before they joined the YKQ-2421, with there being a few groups who have made peace with one another and coexist. However, far less savory groups act as if a war is ongoing and often refuse to recognize the YKQ-2421's authority, claiming they're secretly working for the other side.
- The Coreward Territories. The Coreward Territories are where space pirates often make their roost. Preying on the routes between the two clusters of provinces and countries, these pirates don't quite live up to their reputation elsewhere - these groups rarely last long due to their sole focus often being piracy with little concern as to future sustainability, and the few pirate groups that actually did think about their future sustainability have often become clusters of smaller worlds that often have aligned themselves with the YKQ-2421 out of political convenience. The routes themselves are generally populated by the Khysaac (Idealists) - an ideology that believes so heavily in the YKQ-2421 that they will abide by its rules regardless of if there's anyone to enforce them, with Khysaac fleets existing to defend the routes from whatever pirate group raids them.
Interstellar Relations
The YKQ-2421 lacks any relations with any other polity, given that it has been isolated up until very recently.
Demographics
Out of the 494 trillion people living in the YKQ-2421, all are either Qelua, Ykate, or both - sapient alien life has not been encountered by the YKQ-2421 yet.
Ykate
The Ykate (yeh-kah-tay) are the organic (and often cybernetically augmented) creators of the Qelua. Omnivorous arthropod-like beings that tend to be around 7-8 feet tall on average, with four arms and two legs, four eyes, and an appearance of a split jaw, they are particularly powerful and fast - on average, they are able to lift up to two times their weight. They also possess both an endoskeleton and a chitinous exoskeleton - their skin tends to be in shades of brown and beige, with spots and patterns of green, yellow, red, and brown and beige. The average Ykate enjoys a lifespan of around 150 standard years - however, this is not accounting for the numerous cybernetic and genetic augmentations some undergo that can make them live for far longer. Around 16 trillion Ykate live within the YKQ-2421.
Little is known of early Ykate history other than that they appear to have been the predominant species of a prominent spacefaring civilization that collapsed thanks to an unexplained increase in spacetime anomalies. Even Ykate traditional stories are at a loss for how this happened, often attributing these events simply bad luck, claiming to not attempt to explain the unexplainable. Until relatively recently, most Ykate worlds were not unified at all and were often isolated from one another, and have varying diverse groups scattered across numerous star systems descended from isolated colonies - many in higher-G environments are shorter, while those in low-G environments are taller, with some Ykate being adapted for zero-G and having immense trouble in higher gravity environments.
The Ykate practice of cybernetic augmentation often takes the form of replacing limbs, eyes, organs, often to get a better-quality one that's more capable, or even for purely aesthetic reasons - these are also done so one can access the digitally augmented worlds of the YKQ-2421 more readily, allowing them easier navigation across the world. Few Ykate are not cybernetically augmented, and those that aren't generally are a minority. Genetic augmentation is also commonly practiced, but is nowhere near as prevalent as cybernetic modification, with its usage often being limited to doing things such as improving physical strength, sight, endurance, and most commonly, reducing chances of their bodies rejecting cybernetic augmentations and making their bodies able to adjust to different levels of gravity more.
Qelua
The Qelua (chel-oo-a) are a robotic species created by the Ykate, and powered via electric charge primarily sourced via solar power, with wildly varying origins. Little is known of their early history beyond their shared ancestry, and until recently, their worlds were not united at all. In modern day, the Qelua have varying, massively diverse groups scattered across numerous star systems and numerous "forms" that describe the physical appearance (or lack thereof) of an individual Qelua, with Qelua often simply referring to each other as just the word for their "form."
Qelua-tei
The Qelua-tei (chel-oo-a tay), or just the **Tei**. The Qelua-tei are disembodied Qelua lacking a distinctive body, operating on digital systems as programs on said systems. Having existed since before the collapse of the proto YKQ-2421 civilization, the Qelua-Tei prefer to live in digital worlds, with many living in processor swarms orbiting worlds and stars. Thanks to their extremely different lives compared to embodied Qelua, the Qelua-Tei are sometimes referred to by both themselves and others as just Tei. The origins of the Tei are unclear, but they seemed to have often popped up managing systems automated systems such as defenses or resource distribution, suggesting that the Tei were used as managers of automated systems in the proto YKQ-2421 civilization. The Tei since then have become a vast majority in the YKQ-2421 due to requiring far less in terms of resources to live than anyone else, with them numbering up at around 460 trillion, while embodied Qelua number at only 18 trillion - however, the Tei are similar to other Qelua and the Ykate, in that they have identical intelligence to them, making them general AIs.
Qelua-Kye
The Qelua-kye (chel-oo-a kh-eye) are Qelua who, while embodied, physically do not resemble the humanoid frame of the Ykate - their forms are many, ranging from insect-like with many limbs to moving around on wheels with no visible legs, to even more stationary spider-like forms. They often prefer far less recognizable places to live than more Ykate-like Qelua, with things made for them, such as door handles and basic tools, looking almost alien compared to those that the Qelua-yke, Qelua-yta, and Ykate use. The origin of the Qelua-ye appears to be with industrial robotics, with stories often stating the Qelua-kye were created by factories to carry on their torch of industry. The Qelua-kye are a slightly less prevalent group than other embodied Qelua, but not by much.
Qelua-yke
The Qelua-yke (chel-oo-a yee-kay) are embodied Qelua who only vaguely resemble the Ykate - while possessing similar six-limbed appearances, with four arms and two legs, they very obviously do not look like Ykate, possessing features such as very clearly non-Ykate facial features despite the presence of features such as eyes and mouths, featureless faces with only screens that may or may not emote, or faces only possessing cameras and robotic detailing, and no mouth. Thanks to their physical proximity to the Ykate, the Qelua-yke were often designed to be able to use similar tools as the Ykate - as a result, many Qelua-yke live quite similar lives to their Ykate counterparts. Stories of their origins are vague, ranging from being created for industrial purposes to being created to serve as friends - no single origin seems to describe how or why the Qelua-yke exist, and few tend to put much stock into it as a result. In terms of population, the Qelua-yke are a slight majority for embodied AIs
Qelua-yta
The Qelua-yta (chel-oo-a yeh-taah) are embodied Qelua who look similar to or near-identical to Ykate, often possessing similar facial features depicted on screens and similar to identical proportions - oftentimes, the only thing visually distinguishing a Qelua-yta from a Ykate are features such as a skin tone that does not occur naturally in Ykate, glowing lines across the body, or even just robotic-looking eyes. Their extreme physical proximity to the Ykate made them often blend in with Ykate societies in some areas, often being mistaken for tattooed Ykate and treated identically to the Ykate. While not a majority, they are a prevalent minority, with many groups related to celebrating Qelua-yta cultures existing. They are also notable for their culinary traditions, something uncommon in YKQ-2421 due to organics being a minority. These traditions were notably enabled by their Ykate-like physiology allowing for the consumption of food and drink as energy sources.
