The Kliegmean War (1954-1960), also known as the Kliegmean War of Independence(in Kliegme) or the Garan Emergency(in the Frost Empire), was a civil war fought in Kliegme between the Kliegmean United Front and the Garan State, which was aided by the Frost Empire's Military Forces. The United Front fought to win independence for Kliegme while protecting Karnetvorians and to establish a democratic, federal republic, while the Garan State and Frost forces fought to establish a Garan nation void of Karnetvorian influence and protect Frost interests in the region.
While a state of war was officially declared on May 3rd, 1956, armed uprisings and guerilla warfare started as soon as the Karnetvorian Dominion of Crabry revolted against the Karnetvorian Empire after the defeat in Clocktown and the failure of Operation Deich in 1954. The Governor of the Dominion, Dmitry Pavlov, had negotiated a creation of a Provisional Kliegmean Government, which was consisted of Karnetvorian officials and industrialists, the Dominion Defence Army, and both Garan Collaborators and Moderate Independence Activists. The Provisional Government soon declared its ties to the Karnetvorian empire to be void, and sought an armistice with the Allies. Despite the Armistice of Myurmyansk detailing that occupation of the former Dominion is not to be conducted unless the collective Allied Nations deem it necessary, the Allies, especially the Frost Empire, were not trustful of the Provisional Government as it was consisted of Former Imperial officials, and thus saw it as a temporary placeholder until a suitable replacement could be found. The Frost Empire, acting according to the terms of Karnetvorian Surrender, set up a Military Occupation in February 7th 1955, and set up a Collaboration Government in Gawrnov by the name of the Garan State.
Background
By March of 1955, the Former Dominion was divided into 3 parts, West of the Itrysh river that was under control of the Garanian State and the East, which was under the Provisional Government. Neither side recognised each other, though both decided to bide their time and solidify their control and launch propaganda campaigns to dislegitimise the other before going to war against. A third party came in the form of neutral militias, of which the Alman Militias soon consolidated into the Crabryan Ducal Corps, which sought to create a United Crabryan Duchy, which was consisted of and supported by Almans. During the short period of relative peace, the Garanian State enacted anti-Karnetvorian measures, which was unpopular not only by the Karnetvorians, but also the Garans, who deemed the Karnetvorians as fellow members of a "Kliegmean Society." These policies also soured relations between the Garanian State and the Frost Empire, who deemed the measures to be too extreme and the dissenting population negatively affecting the Occupation.
The Occupation itself was also inadequate in securing key positions in the former dominion, due to the formerly abandoned Karnetvorian fortifications and anti-air systems being re-armed and manned by Kliegmean United Front forces. In particular, the underground supply chains that linked Bisei and Myurmyansk, alongside the heavy coastal fortifications, is considered a part of the reason why Frost was unable to break through Kliegmean defences during the siege of Bisei. Extensive underground supply networks in this fashion, nicknamed "Kliegman Metro" by Frost troops, was also used to supply partisan units and to launch attacks on Frost forces by surprise.
The May 3rd Incident, occuring on May 3rd 1956, is what many Historians deem as the start of the road to war, occured during a demonstration against the Garanian State's extremism, in which the crowd was dispersed by Garan State Military Police firing upon the crowd. This resulted in a significant blow to the Garan State's legitimacy and support. Which the Provisional Government used to grow Anti-Occupation and Anti-Frostian sentiments. However, declassified documents would reveal that after the incident, the Frost Empire had planned a coup against the Garan State to establish Direct control on the former Dominion to salvage the occupation, but the beginning of the war caused it to be cancelled.
Partly due to Dmitry Pavlov's pre-War policies that emphasised economic partnership with Termina in order to further industrialise and modernise the Dominion's economy, the connections made by Kliegmean Industrialists and Pavlov himself were crucial for the Provisional Government to recieve Terminan Diplomatic and Material Support. The Kliegmean Provisional Government's forces were bolstered by POWs caputred during the Crabryan Front of the Great War being repatriated from Terminan captivity, as well as modern equipment and military advisors being provided through the Terminan Confederacy.
The May 3rd Incident became the main cause for Nasphiliti involvement in aiding the United Front, covert until 1955 and later openly. Internal factions within Nasphilitae, then in their own war, namely the Junta, the P3 Parliamentarian Coalition and the Austral-Nasphiliti Nobility. Their mutual interest was to secure that neither Karnetvorian nor Alman influence on Crabry topple one-another, which would potentially threaten the survival of its' own Austral-heritage Nobility. The Nobility and P3 Coalition saw a Garan State as "an idealist but unrealistic option". The Junta did not wish to support the Garan State as to preserve the armed neutrality it had kept during the Great War, which was a key factor for why they've gained power in the first place. The Kliegmean United Front recieved (due to armed neutrality in the Great War) a stockpile bulk of ammunition and advanced equipment from the Military Junta government of Nasphilitae; which later on focused to send aid in the form of highly advanced cryptographic equipment.
The Garan State was provided surplus military supplies from the Allies, bar Termina. However, due to growing Frost involvement into Gara and the Frost mistrust of the Ultranationalist Garan government from the onset of the war, the Garan Military found itself turned into an auxillary force for the Frost Army by 1957.The Garan Military would mostly see action in the Southern Campaigns, during which they, due to less reliable finances, found themselves plundering for resources, which lost them support from the population, and led to many militias rising against them.
The Provisional Government launched an Ultimatum against the Frost Crabry Occupation Forces on June 23rd to abolish the Garan State and withdraw from Crabry. This Ultimatum was ignored, due to the aforementioned Coup planning. War was declared on June 25th, 1956.
