The format of the competitions varies from category to category. For Kata single there is a preliminary knock out round where participants perform katas against each other after the classical tree system which determines 4 finalists. If a round was to have more than 16 competitors, the gorup is split into two pools which produce two finalists each. In the final round, the participants perform katas after one another, however they are rated by judges. The highest and lowest ratings are crossed out, an average is made from the remaining three. The karatekasare sorted per their average. If two karatekas have the same rating average, the one with the highest lowest rating wins. If the lowest ratings are the same, the same procedure is done with the highest ratings, then the second lowest etc. If all ratings are the same, the karatekas must perform a new kata until a winner is decided. For Kata Teams the preliminaty round is conducted by the rating syste, until only 4 teams remain. The final round is conducted in the same way, the kata single final round is. For kumite there is a knock out system from the very beginnig. Karatekas fight each other to reach the final. The fights last 2 minutes, with the final lasting 3 minutes. A fight is won immediately when either an ippon is reached (2 points), two wazaaris (wazaari = 1 point) or regularly when of the participants has more points after the time has run out. In case of a draw, the fight is continued by 1 minute. Only one extension is possible.
