The Alanian Hetmanate (Eskonic: Haetmanja Alanija; Alman: Hetmanat von Alanien), officially the Eskonic Hetmanate of Alania (Eskonic: Haetmanja Iskonija Alanija; Alman: Eskonischen Hetmanat von Alanien) and less commonly the Alanian Host, was a medieval to early modern Eskonic state that existed from 1248 until its conquest by the Elbonian Empire in 1696 (although it continued to exist as the Kingdom of Eastern Alania as part of the Sixth Sunlandic Confederation and the Baronetcy of Sljeko Jina-Baranija and Sugovijmo as part of the Elbonian Empire).

The Hetmanate was founded following the Battle of Srjalu, when rebel leader Rajka Veljesanje established himself as the Hetman of Alania following the Eskonic Civil War. During the 15th century, the Hetmanate became rivals with the Sunlandic Confederation, a product of the earlier Eskon-Sunlander enmity. The Hetmanate became a regional powerplayer throughout the 15th to 16th century. However, by the 17th century, the Hetmanate had been weaken by incompetent leadership, and its rivalry with the Sunlandic Confederation caused it to spend large amounts on wars. The Hetmanate was dissolved by the emperor of Elbonia Lœtviek I following his conquest of the Hetmanate in 1696.

After the dissolution, the territories of the Hetmanate was split into three parts. The first was the Kingdom of Eastern Alania, which was the only part of Alania that hadn't fell to the hands of Elbonia during the dissolution. It would become part of the Sixth Sunlandic Confederation until the confederation was defeated by Elbonia. The other two parts were the Elbonian Baronetcy of Sljeko Jina-Baranija and Sugovijmo. Parts of Eastern Alania was split between the two Baronetcies. Alania would remain part of Elbonia for 119 years until the latter's defeat during the Weissersteiner War of Unification, when parts of the former lands of Alania would be released as a new sovereign state known as the Second Alanian Hetmanate.

History

Battle of Srjalu and establishment of the Hetmanate

Before the establishment of the Alanian Hetmanate, the Eskonic world was united under a very loose confederation of semi-nomadic people groups. During the times of Vojvo the Founder, the loose confederation was turned into a semi-centralized nomadic empire known as the Greater Eskonic Host. Under Vojvo, efforts were made to centralize and urbanize the Eskonic peoples into village sized territories known as Hosts (which are led by Hetmans), one of which was the Host of Alania.

In 1244, the Great Host descended into civil war when Cujcuk Sojvejmo the Mad attempted to put all the Hosts under his direct authority. After Cujcuk assassinated the then-Hetman of Alania, a rebel leader by the name of Rajka Veljesanje took up arms against the Great Host and led the Alanians into open revolt. In July 14, forces of Rajka met up with forces of the Great Host in the Alanian village of Srjalu, where a bloody battle broke out. To the surprise of almost everyone, the rebel forces were victorious and forced the forces of the Great Host to retreat from Alania.

After the battle, Rajka declared himself as the new and first Hetman of an independent Alania, effectively making the Alanian Host the first state to have successfully come out as independent following the Eskonic Civil War.

Expansion into neighboring territories

The end of the Eskonic Civil War saw Alania, alongside several other Hosts, declare themselves independent. Now an independent state, the Alanian Hetmanate began annexing, either willingly or forcefully, several neighboring smaller Hosts and villages.
