As the final Alchemist passed into death, the secrets uncovered by the first generation left them to fall into a collective depression. Nevertheless, the species had to continue, and the planet's Null supplies were steadily decreasing. Using the data and teachings left behind by the Alchemists, the Twila were able to quickly achieve space travel. The first deposits of the precious resource were found on the planet of Vezun, and so naturally it became a focal point in Twila politics (or lack thereof). Over the course of the "trials of Vezun" multiple rising factions would attempt to take control of the planet, leading to constant warfare between the radical groups. The trials would finally end when an emigrant of Auren, Candella Pers, entered the scene, swaying popular opinion towards her ideals of a meritocratic paradise.
The passing of the last alchemist was an event mourned by all, and undoubtedly a turning point in the Twila's history. Once again finding themselves alone in a cold, indifferent universe, it was decided by the ruling council that the logs from the Alchemist's ship would be accessed and searched for any notes the dying species had left for their successors. What they found in those records is still a matter of intense debate, but what is certain is that the experience would leave them haunted for the rest of their lives. Regardless, their endeavor would not be for naught, and the rebuilding of the planet would only accelerate from there. Moreover, the discovery of the existence of other habitable worlds left the populace with questions that they could not leave unanswered. So began the quest to touch the stars, to populate a planet both alien and familiar. So began the Trials of Vezun, and the growth of the Twila from lost children to shaky but determined pioneers of the void.

At the turn of the 4th millennia BBT, it was becoming abundantly clear that the twila population had outgrown its supplies of null, and that without drastic action the entire territory would fall to violence and terror. Thus, with steeled hearts, the Lexia Corthos declared the end of the Twilight Ascendency and the beginning of what historians would call the Cruxus Null, the greatest crisis in the species' history. While the core worlds of TwAs remained relatively unchanged, the rest of space became a battle ground over each and every drop of null.

The Chemical Wars are a catch-all for the series of conflicts within the Twilight Ascendency during the Cruxus Null but generally refer to the devastating feud between Drellun and Arc'hana, the two major players in the unadministered territories, during the crisis. While Arc'hana began as something of a protectorate of Aesis, maintaining good relations with its forebear, Drellun was the exact opposite. Founded as a colony to remove the perceived Dresk threat humanely, there were a great many, especially in Arc'hana, who viewed its rising power and influence to be an existential threat for the species. The first Chemical Wars were somewhat minor and fought largely over the smaller territories, but as the two Eyes grew so did the scale of their conflict. What began as easy wins for Arc'hana began to grind on longer and longer as Drellun eclipsed it in technological advancement, finding more and more artifacts in the sparsely populated right. With each change of the border, each aristocratic family that rose in conquered territory, the Alchemic Twila only grew to hate the Dresk more and more, until the wars ceased to be about expansion for them and instead turned into an excuse for ethnic cleansing. The last Chemical War would come to an end after the discovery of the Transmutation in 2987 BBT. Unwilling to let the hope for their species rest in the hands of a violent regime, Aesis finally entered the war on Drellun's side and the two would push towards the heart of Arc'hana for six brutal years of fighting. With the battle of Creation's Tears, the terror was over, the Cruxus Null at its end. A millennium after its conclusion, The Twilight Assembly had returned.

== Governance and The Eyes ==
== Governance ==
The Twilight Ascendency is a Federated Meritocratic Oligarchy, with an element of managed democracy remaining at the "local" level. TwAs is split into its three Eyes based on the separate cultural and political developments of the Cruxus Null, within which semi-devolved regions exist. See [[Twila (A1-0)#Society and Culture|here]] for more details.
The contemporary Twilight Ascendency is a Confederated Technocracy, made up of the three "Eyes" of governance that rose up out of the Cruxus Null. Representatives for the Lexia Corthos are chosen from within the disciplines deemed to be crucial for the running of the nation, but "locally" each of the three eyes and their subsequent jurisdictions are granted free reign to decide how to best manage themselves in accordance with national law and meritocratic ideals.

The three Eyes of TwAs each look to time; the past, present, and future. Octhana is the Eye of History, and its inhabitants are doomed to forever take up the mantle of honor and righteousness to atone for the blood spilt by their forebears. It is additionally known for holding the Transmutation, a point of contention at the conclusion of the Cruxus Null, and for hosting the extra-governmental entity known as the Alchemists. Aesis is the Eye of Governance, and the hand of temperance that has held the species together since the conclusion of the Trials of Vezun. Although considered to be the region of "bland" or "basic" Twila, this is only a testament to the importance of it in mediating disputes between the younger Eyes. Drellun is the Eye of Progress, the land of outcasts not only too stubborn to die, but determined to live. It is characterized by its high quantity of Dresks and employment of semi-noble houses, unashamed of the stereotypes its people faced at the emergence of the Dresk race during the Cruxus Null.

History

The Living Breath

5074 BBT

After a period of incubation within metal pods, the first of the Twila awoke to find themselves seemingly alone in the universe. Perhaps they would have died there, confused and afraid in the ruins of a fallen empire, if not for the enigmatic Alchemists. Descending from the heavens on the second day of their awakening, these figures would serve to be the Twila's saviors, and once they were gone, almost their undoing.

The Trials of Vezun

5032-4880 BBT

The Cruxus Null

4003-2981 BBT

At the turn of the 4th millennia BBT, it was becoming abundantly clear that the twila population had outgrown its supplies of null, and that without drastic action the entire territory would fall to violence and terror. Thus, with steeled hearts, the Lexia Corthos declared the end of the Twilight Ascendency and the beginning of what historians would call the Cruxus Null, the greatest crisis in the species' history. While the core worlds of TwAs remained relatively unchanged, the rest of space became a battle ground over each and every drop of null.

The Chemical Wars

3992-2981 BBT

The Chemical Wars are a catch-all for the series of conflicts within the Twilight Ascendency during the Cruxus Null but generally refer to the devastating feud between Drellun and Arc'hana, the two major players in the unadministered territories, during the crisis. While Arc'hana began as something of a protectorate of Aesis, maintaining good relations with its forebear, Drellun was the exact opposite. Founded as a colony to remove the perceived Dresk threat humanely, there were a great many, especially in Arc'hana, who viewed its rising power and influence to be an existential threat for the species.
