Etymology
History
Pre-FTL
Calerost as a nation is first mentioned as "The Serene Duchy Of Calerost" in medieval times, being situated at the north of Ilanor's supercontinent. With time it expanded and became the Empire Of Calerost, even though it still wasn't a major power in any way. That however changed with the Industrial Revolution, as Calerost was very rich in natural resources and industrialized fast, making it a major power. After three continental wars, the Empire of Calerost managed to unify the world, inventing FTL technologies soon thereafter.
Early FTL History
One of the first systems Calerost visited was Gil Miria, known as the "Gem Star". They quickly discovered that, instead of being a star, it was in fact a wormhole leading to a parallel dimension, known as Mirial Space. This caused a religious revolution, as in every major calerostan religion Gil Miria was mentioned as "the Gate to the Realm Of The Gods". Soon enough the properties of Mirial Space were discovered, allowing for even faster FTL travel than before. Shortly afterwards, the discovery of the Mirion, an exotic fundamental particle originating from Mirial Space, caused a scientific revolution. Soon enough however the Empire discovered that it wasn't alone in Mirial Space: native creatures called "Mirial Entities" inhabited the dimension. Even though they really didn't appreciate Calerost's presence, the Empire managed to find ways to deal with them. Eventually Calerost would discover a second wormhole, called Miria Annon, which possessed different properties that allowed Mirial Entities to exit their dimension, and enter Real Space.
Setup Of The Miraline War
After various researches and experiments, the Edhel discovered that the DNA of Mirial Entities could be used to modify their own. A lot of experimentation started on a space station around Beleg Lumë, called Beleg Lumë Station. At first, the combination experiments didn't go above 3% of modified DNA, as was ordered by the state, but in secret scientists experimented with more, sometimes even getting up to a maximum of 40%. The sapient humanoid creatures created as a result of these experiments were called the Miraline and had superedhel characteristics, like greater strength, a higher resistance to gravitational forces and stronger telepathic powers. They also had the unique ability of retaining genetic memory from the Mirial Entities. One specific scientist released a genetic modification virus on a far off colony, and a couple more followed later. Calerost had no idea what was happening and why they were losing contact with the colonies, with scientists from the station claiming a sort of Mirial Storm was interrupting communications. In actuality, a new state was forming, known as the Miraline Hegemony, who immediately started building new warships. Their capital was a colony around Miria Annon.
The Miraline War
After building up their war fleet, the Miraline carried out their first attack against Calerost. The resulting conflict, known as the Battle of Celebar Prime, marked the start of the war. The Miraline managed to take over the Celebar System, from which the north of Calerost was governed. Soon after they attacked Ilanor itself trough Mirial Space. That event is referred to as The Day Of Many Tears in calerostan writing. Around a third of the planet's population was killed, including the Emperor, but his son, Edhelgil Belaith, survived and took control of the nation.
The miraline war lasted for around 100 years and is divided into 3 sections:
- The War Of Many Tears
- The War In Heaven
- The Great Revenge
The War Of Many Tears
The War Of Many Tears is the first part of the war, marked by Miraline expansionism and Calerost being unable to stop them. It starts with the Battle of Celebar Prime, and lasts until the Dagor-Mein-Nangwë, the Battle Of First Victory.
The War in Heaven
The War In Heaven is the second section of the war and is characterized by the Miraline and Calerost being mostly well matched. It got it's name from the fat that most of the battles were fought in Mirial Space, which the Edhelrim believe is the Realm Of The Gods. It started with the Battle Of First Victory and ended with the Battle Of Thalion, where the majority of the Miraline navy was crushed.
The Great Revenge
The Great Revenge is the third section of the miraline war and it marks Calerost's absolute extinguishment of the Miraline. It's most notable feature is the purging of most Miraline-controlled planets, and ends with the famous Last Stand of the Miraline. It should be noted that in an attempt to escape their doomed fate, the Miraline started scouting the closest Nebulae to their territories in search of a place to hide. The war as a whole ends with the invention of the "Mirion Fusion Trans-Space Collapsation Device", more commonly known as the Wormhole Killer, a weapon capable of destroying wormholes. It was activated inside of Beleg Lumë, collapsing the interdimensional tunnel. This caused an energy wave so large that it destroyed the entire system, which is now referred to as Sarch Miria, the Gem Grave.
