Syldain has been settled for thousands of years
Etymology
The current republic and the prior kingdom is simply named after the largest island, Syldain. The origin of the island's name isn't fully clear, but experts attribute the name to the proto-Syldean word "Syld", which has been hypothesized to mean either "jungle" or "wall". The first hypothesis comes off from the archaic Syldean word "Sylde", which meant "jungle" or "rainforest". However, modern historians also defend that the origin of the name may be in reference to Syldain's characteristic mountain ranges, which divide the island into several areas of flat terrain, as if they were big dividing "walls".
With all of these hypotheses, the name of Syldain could have initially meant "land/place of the jungles", but given the presence of jungles in other islands of the East Cordilian Islands, Syldain meaning "land/place of the walls" could be the likelier meaning of the name.
