The Democratic Socialist Assembly, or the DSA, is a user created region founded in 2011 by Opalaland. It is based upon socialist, social-democratic, communist and liberal principals. The region specifically disallows certain WA categories and keeps a standard of civil rights and political freedoms, set out in its Charter.

History

Pre-Founding

Before the DSA was founded, many of its members used to belong to another region, the Democratic Socialist Alliance. A series of disputes and a power struggle lead to the creation of the region.

The Great Split

The Great Split, an exodus of members from the Democratic Socialist Alliance stemming from a dispute over Regional Embassies, occurred in early April 2011. The new regional embassy feature had just entered NationStates. The WA Delegate, who was Bazlantis, and the founder of the region, Cynthia McKinney, after many months of power struggles, were fighting for power over the embassies. Eventually after multiple embassies have been denied construction, CMK repealed the executive powers of the WA Delegate. This provoked anger and resentment amongst the other nations in the region, who claimed that CMK became a dictator and in breach of the Charter. CMK claimed that she was not against executive WA Delegates per se, but that by cancelling constructions, Bazlantis was in breach of the charter. The debate ended on the 8th of April 2011 when Opalaland, along with Bazlantis founded the Democratic Socialist Assembly.

Government

The Democratic Socialist Assembly has an Executive Body, headed by The Council, a Congress that serves as its Legislative body, and a Judicial Body lead by The Court.

The Founder

The Founder, although has administrative power, barely intervenes within the Government, and has power limitations. The Founder cannot exercise administrative powers without the request of the Congress and/nor the majority of congress. The founder is also not allowed to run for elections.

Executive Body

The Council, currently the 5th Council serves as the sole executive body of the region. Its members exercises administrative privileges and conducts diplomacy in accordance with the rules of the Region's Charter and Its Principles.

The Council consists of the Delegate, Secretary-General, Councilor of Justice, Councilor of Foreign Affairs, Councilor of Domestic Affairs, and the Councilor of Roleplay.

  • World Assembly Delegate - serves as the head of the region, and represents the region at the World Assembly.
  • Secretary-General - Conducts administrative functions for the region
  • Councilor of Justice - Upholds and Maintains the rule of law within the region
  • Councilor of Foreign Affairs - Negotiates with other regions on behalf of the DSA
  • Councilor of Domestic Affairs - Promotes regional activities
  • Councilor of Roleplay - Coordinates Roleplay activity in the region

All council members are elected during the months of January, April, July, and October. Their terms only lasts about 3 months, but have no term limits.

The current council members are the following:

Legislative Body

The Congress serves as the legislative body of the region. It is composed by all members of said Congress. Becoming a member of Congress is voluntary.

Judicial Body

The Court serves as the Judicial body of the Region, they are the ones that help maintain peace within the region, and settle internal disputes within residents. The Court is headed by the High Judge, which is elected by the Congress every 3 months, and has no term limits.

Foreign Relations

The region takes foreign relations relations very seriously, giving proper consideration to embassy proposals by allowing the Congress to voice their opinion after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has submitted a recommendation. Terms apply for the acceptance of embassies which are established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Once an embassy request has been approved, an ambassadorial nation is sent to the region in question, with an active ambassador. The region is a member of the Partnership of Sovereignty.
