The Great Game is a game played in Trianar focused on replicating espionage, stealth, and secrets. It is considered a sport, but it is played more like a moving story. It is extremely popular for both high-stakes and casual play.
Premise
The Great Game was proposed to the Trianarö government around 750 BBT by the company "Grand Incorporated" as a gimmick for their new supermarket chains. It started with the Grand Emporum; A store chain that was supposedly a front from the Emporium's Masters to collect secrets. Alsla favored secrets of love, Entaö favored secrets of power, Ûslan favored secrets of scandals, and Nalra favored secrets of knowledge. Supposedly, before the events of the game, there was a schism. This schism led to players picking a side, and using infiltration tactics to locate, spy on, and eventually steal the "secrets" of their foes. While these original four factions are relatively defunct, many popped up in their place with developments in the Game, and the Grand Emporium remained an important facet due to the usage of the Rose Rings and Digikeys as currency related to the game, as well as the code-language of Xandau. While the events of the Game are not real, they are carried out in person: Spying, raids, heists of game-related materials and code-breaking are all real, but considered part of an "In-character act." The Game is sometimes controversial as it does sometimes affect reality, but there are few recorded cases of it negatively affecting people, and as a "sport" of sorts, players consider most actions to be all in good fun and competition.
Current Major Factions
- The New Masters: These players formed together shortly after the fall of the original four factions. They represent an "old guard" of sorts in the Game- They hold immense influence, and combat attempts for the Game to bleed out in areas it wasn't meant to be in. The masters only recruit already experienced players of the Game.
- Those of Recollection: Considered the successors to the followers of Nalra. Their goals are to learn about the shattered history of the Great Game- The various scraps of code-languages spoken and written down, what caused schisms in formerly strong factions, and more. They also want to learn of the history of before the Great Game- Some people say that Xandau predates the Great Game, and that the Game itself has a history before its official start.
- The Karnlai: Considered the sucessors of the Followers of Entaö. These Players use their influence to get power over other factions of the Game. They are known to keep hordes of Rose Rings to pay out to Mercs and to other factions. They come into frequent conflict with the Masters when their players start to make trouble outside of the Game.
- Rose Keys: These players use the Game to make money, primarily abusing the fact that Digikeys and Rose Rings can be transferred into real currency. They are generally disliked by most other factions and are bitter enemies with The Masters, as well as The Highwaymen due to conflicts over Rose Rings
- The Highwaymen: These players' goal is to obtain as many Rose Rings as possible. They do this by scouting out player bases, particularly hidden ones, and stealing their stashes. They frequently come into conflict with the Karnlai and Rose Keys for this reason.
Slang and codewords
Merc: A player who does not keep themselves to any faction, and instead does "commission" work for any faction who pays them.
Xandau
The Code-language of Xandau is in fact a script that is generally written as a corruption of Neo-indavral, or in rare cases a version of an obscure historical language. Xandau is written sometimes by carving, and sometimes by brush, and rarely, in flames. Other methods of writing Xandau are not considered, by law, to be a part of the Great Game, and thus will be considered vandalism if written in public spaces, or legally viable threats if sent to someone and decoded. Using any form of translator to decode valid Xandau is considered a violation of the rules of the game and Players who do this are generally looked down upon even by factions like the Rose Keys.
