Sunland, officially the Kingdom of Sunland, is a kingdom and province located in southeastern Sugovia, bordering the provinces of Alania, Otfridania, Esharia, Steidland, and Algaria. It is the largest province within Sugovia by both land area and population. Major cities include Sundasval (its capital and largest city, also the second largest city in Sugovia), Herzogenbush, and Guldenkap.
The history of Sunland includes its earliest settlement by Sugovic peoples, namely the Pegathians. Sunland was at the heart of the Pegathian Confederation, the largest and most powerful Sugovic state during antiquity up until the middle ages.
Etymology
The origins of the name Sunland is believed to have come from the Sunnian dynasty, which ruled the Duchy of Sunland from 1094 until the extinction of their house in 1343, after which they were replaced by the Clovian dynasty. The Sunnians were descendants of Sunno, a mercenary who was ennobled by the authorities within the Pegathian Confederation and became one of the most prominent dynasties of the Almannic era of the Pegathian Confederation.
History
Middle ages
Around the year 1000 AD, after the arrival of the Almannic peoples into modern Sugovia, the territory of the Pegathian Confederation saw a shift in demographics. The Almannic Ottfriedine tribe, alongside the Friedwartine, the Harnare, the Esharii, and the Steids, made up roughly 2/3 of the Confederation's population. By 1050 AD, it was reported that the leadership of the Pegathian Confederation had largely shifted to the hands of the Almannic tribes, and the position of Stateholder became hereditary through the Genobedics, a dynasty of powerful Ottfriedine nobles.
In 1094, the Pegathian Confederation came under a succession crisis with two competing Genobedics vying for the throne. This led to the Pegathian Confederation dissolving into several smaller states, including the Duchy of Sunland which was ruled by Sunnian dynasty. Sunland was ruled by the Sunnian dynasty until the death of Siegmar. Siegmar died without an heir and the throne went to his distant relative Randolf from the Clovian dynasty.
Grand Duchy of Sunland
In 1432, duke Albert II decided to elevate his duchy to a grand duchy following his successful annexation of Herzogenbush and its surrounding areas.
Province of Alemannia
The Grand Duchy of Sunland was incorporated into the Gianlucian province of Alemannia in 1548. At the time, the grand duchy was ruled by Henry III.
In 1608, the Clovian dynasty went extinct with the death of the last male dynast, the then-12 year old Otto II. The throne would have passed to Otto's eldest sister, Maria, however due to disagreements between the many local nobility, the throne instead passed to her husband, Frederick I, beginning the Schwarzburg rule over the Grand Duchy.
In 1734, Frederick Ernest II joined the Nobles' War on the side of the nobles, annexing the pro-Gianlucian Duchy of Marianna, the northern portions of the Duchy of Steidland, and the free city of Guldenkap. In 1736, he proclaimed himself as King Frederick Ernest I, elevating Sunland into a kingdom.
