History

During the time of the Three Counties of the Northern Isles there were three flags flown on Anserisan territory, the flags are now the flags of each island that compose Anserisa today.

Principality of Anserisa

Flag of the Principality of Anserisa

With the coronation of Prince Stéphano I in 1443 and the accession of the House of Anserisa a unified flag was designed to bring all the islands together under the new rule. It was taken from the colours of the Coat of Arms of Anserisa and was composed of a vertical tricolour of red, white and black, with the shield of the House of Anserisa in the center.

It was also taken from the colours of the flags of the counties of Galluso and Melégrisa which incorporated the black. The flag of the County of Castorida served as the basis for the creation of the Coat of Arms of Anserisa.

The flag is still in use for the special anniversaries, especially on 2nd June for the Prince Stéphano I Day.

Anserisan Empire

During the Republican Revolution of 1790-1792, the republicans used the tricolour from which they removed the shield in the centre and they flown the flag from the side, making it an horizontal tricolour to symbolize the toppling of the nobility that ruled Anserisa. When Emperor Hadriano proclaimed the Anserisan Empire he adopted the flag used by the republicans and incorporated three silver stars, representing the three islands which were given some autonomy under the imperial regime.

The flag is only used by the most conservative groups in Anserisa and promoters of the return to the Empire. It is mostly frowned upon to use the flag in any official events, even historical ones. It is used by the descendants of Hadriano and claimants of the imperial throne of Anserisa.

Modern flag of the Republic of Anserisa

The flag of Anserisa is taken from the same pattern as the old Coat of Arms of Anserisa adopted by the House of Anserisa in 1443. This flag was adopted to give a brand new identity to Anserisa, voided of black which was representative of the Principality and the Empire, both regimes opposed to the republican ideals on which the new republic was founded. But it was still rooted in the identity of Anserisa for it was taken from the Coat of Arms drawn by Stéphano I, considered the founder of Anserisa.

Display and use

The flag is usually flown from the government buildings and at military bases in Anserisa. Private use is not widespread but is encouraged by the government through its Gloria Anserisa patriotic program. Only on national holidays is there widespread private use. The flag is also displayed at times of sadness at half-staff as a sign of respect or national mourning.

The holidays on which flags are put out by the government :

  • 9th April (Remembrance Day) flown at half-mast
  • 2nd June (Prince Stéphano I Day)
  • 21st September (Republic Day)
  • 4th November (President's Day)

Variant flags of Anserisa

Naval Jack

Naval Jack of Anserisa

The Naval Jack of Anserisa has been in used since the first days of the Republic of Anserisa. It is notable for its use of a ration of 1:1 compared to the 2:3 ration of the other flags of Anserisa. It is used on docked vessels only and mostly historical ships locked at different harbours in Anserisa. It is composed of a white field with a red bordure and in the centre the Flag of Anserisa in a cercle surrounded by silver stars.

Proposed Ensign

Many people, mostly civilians are urging the government to adopt an official Ensign for Anserisa and the most commonly used design is composed of a red field with a white horizontal band in the middle and in the centre, three grey stars.

Flags of the islands of Anserisa

Flag of Branta Island
Flag of Haliétusa Island
Flag of Rubecula Island

Each island of Anserisa has a flag, either replicated from the flag of the historical counties of Anserisa or inspired by the former flags of these counties. They however have no official status and are mostly used for historical purposed only. Citizens living in the three islands and historians are pressuring the government to adopt officially these flags.

Flag of Branta

The flag of the island of Branta is the flag that has been in use on the island since the establishment of the County of Castorida in 1201. It is composed of a red field with a white saltire. This flag has been used by all the Counts of Castorida except when Count Césario of Galluso took control of the county. This flag served as the basis for the establishment of the Coat of Arms of the House of Anserisa drawn by Prince Stéphano I in 1443. He did so be removing one of the diagonals of the saltire, leaving the one in use today on the national flag of Anserisa. It is the oldest flag of Anserisa.

Flag of Haliétusa

The flag of Haliétusa is the flag that has been in use on the island since the establishment of the Republic of Anserisa in 1815. It is taken from the flag of the County of Melégrisa established in 1234. The county used the red and white striped flag, the black star was added in 1815 to remember those who suffered during the Anserisan Empire. Origins of the flag are unknown but some speculate that the 5 red stripes represents the five sons of Count Marcello I of Melégrisa, the first count of the island.

Flag of Rubecula

The flag of Rubecula island is the flag that has been in use on the island since the establishment of the History of Anserisa (Pacifica)County of Galluso in 1310. It was also the de facto flag of the Union of the Three Northern Isles. It is composed of a red field with a white cross outline by black and white lines. The incorporation of black on this flag led to the incorporation of the black in the tricolour flag of the Principality of Anserisa. The origins of the flag dates to the Vexillum Order which was founded by the founders of the city of Vexilla, the cross is still found on the crest of the medals awarded by the Order.

Flags of the Government

Some institutions or people affiliated with the government of Anserisa have official flags. Mostly the high offices and the military are the ones who benefit from having official flags.

Flag of the President

The Flag of the President of Anserisa is quite unique in Anserisa, for it is the only flag which has two different sides, the obverse side of the flag is a white field with a red bend and the Seal of Anserisa in the centre, while the reverse side is a white field with a red sinister bend and the Seal of the Republican Commission in the centre.

Manufacturing of the flag is very limited because it requires a machine which can print different designs on both sides.

Flag of the Anserisan Armed Forces

The Anserisan Armed Forces and its branches all have official flags which were adopted at the same time of the creation of the departments. They all follow the same pattern except for the flag of the Anserisan Armed Forces which follows the same pattern of the Brantavilla Military College and the flag of the Anserisan Gendarmeria which is similar to the Flag of the President for the Gendarmeria is also responsible for the safety of the President.
