Salt and Oak (Sedunnic: Eg gjī Derī) is a 2021 Sedunnic thriller written and directed by Matts Afsienn. The film is an adaptation of Derrn Botnienn's Salt and Oak novel series. The story follows former detective sergeant Bettu Homienn (Hejerr Remallu) and detective Laura Way (Anna Young) as they try to uncover a conspiracy that involves Sedunnic trade dynasties ("sesslinners"), the government and a 300 years old murder. It was filmed in Sedunn and Government Island.[1]
The film is rated R.
Plot
It has been two years since Bettu Homienn (Hejerr Remallu) lost his job as detective sergeant at Grovne Police Department following criminal charges of corruption. His life has deteriorated and he and his wife and former colleague Laura Way (Anna Young) have divorced. Laura has remained in the Police and has rapidly climbed the career ladder while Bettu now gambles and sells drugs in exclusive clubs in the Sedunnic capital. One day an attractive woman (Lyes Timienn) approaches him and introduces herself as Vara Tossherr, heiress to an ancient global shipping company. She wants him to investigate a 300 years old murder case, where an ancestor of hers is accused by another wealthy family, Javnallu, of having murdered an ancestor of theirs. They served together on the same ship, and during a battle against pirates it is believed Captain Javnallu was killed by his lieutenant Tossherr. The two families have been in a feud since.
As Bettu starts looking through old archives, he starts seeing his former wife mysteriously around more and more. In fact, Laura is on a mission of her own, investigating corruption within the state, and the tracks lead to the wealthy shipping families. It's soon evident to them that they are looking for the same things, but the question is: who is loyal to whom? And what relevance could such an old cold case have to the matters of the state?
Reception
Salt and Oak received moderate acclaim in Sedunn and the film did not make it to the top three in theatres. However, the film was awarded Best Film and Best Director at the 2021 Southern Gate Festival 2021[2] and has since been among the more popular Sedunnic films on streaming services both nationally and internationally.
