Besern (Besernian: ['berʃlant]), officially the Federal Republic of Besern, is a country in northern Cordilia. Besern is bordered by the Rainbow Sea in the north, Holy Free in the west and the South Pacfic Ocean in the east. Besern is situated with the Boudican Chain in its center, the Phallesmund Delta to the north-east and the Bay of Obravia to the south-west, consisting a territorial size of 355,835 square kilometres. (137,389 square miles), with a population of 83.02 billion within its 18 constituent states. The federation's capital is in Metropolitan Brient, with the top three financial centres in Rungenbouen, Obravia and Treisag. The federation's largest urbanized areas are between the Westerrik Valley and the Tholisian Plain.

Various tribes of Katzyan, Sunerian and Feselae descent have inhabited the regions now known as Hrosberenicia since classical antiquity, the aforementioned region being documented at least before AD 40. In 55 BC, the first citadel, Bina, today the city of Haoenshafen came into existence, starting the citadel era, where tribes merged together to form civilizations. During the 2nd century, these citadels have merged further into duchies through ideas spread from literates and inside and outside the region. Eventually in the 1st millenium, these duchies formed the two empires, the Broncian and the Hsnevian empires, northern Besern being where their main seat of power, being that the spread of such ideas mostly coming in tracing all the way to the Katzyan people and the Feselae people. Following the War of Unification during their coexistence, the Duchy of Broncia took power of Hrosberenicia in the 12th century. Following the Great Incursion from the 14th century, the Hsnevians would eventually take power in the middle of the 16th century before splitting again in the 17th century into the Tholisian-native Grand Duchy of Aufurte, who founded their delegative city in which is now Metropolitan Brient. The Besernian Revolution would bring an end to the duchies in the 18th century and culminate the states into the modern federal republic, which would go through five federations. The Reign of Terror until the middle of the 18th century, the 1853 coup d'état, and the University uprising would bring an end to the first, second and third federations. The Great War and later on the expiration of the Athala Decree would evolve the fourth to the fifth federation with the election of both houses of the Federal Parliament post-bellum.

Besern has a decent economy with a gross-domestic product nominal of 9.189 billion soners (3.948 trillion TSP$). Its natural ports make Besern a major exporter and importer of goods and services, from which they are major players in the medical, economical, science and technological and industrial fields to name a few. As a developed country, Besern, which ranks high on the Human Development Index (HDI), offers social security and a universal healthcare system to its citizens and permanent residents, and environmental protections and tuition-free university education. Besern is an active participant in the World Forum, with other participations in the CPSC and the NCU.

Etymology

The Austral word Besern deviates back to the former name of the region, Hrosberenicia, which came into use after literate migrants from all the way to the Katzyan of the Hianlusse regions (today GI-Land) adopted it, fusing the Berenica Valley term, which is located in the center of Hrosberenicia, the area where the citadels would religiously meet for peace when the name was adopted, for the peoples for regions east of Adellinde. The modern Besernian term Berscheland deviates also to Hrosberenicia, with its literal translation "Land of the Berenices", named after the Berenica Valley, which was spread by the native Sunerian Broncians during the two empires era and the native Katzyan Hsnevians during the Great Incursion. The Berenica Valley term Berenica leads back to the Proto-Berenican word bericovv 'of the Bericovian', which also leads back to the north-eastern Proto-Cordilian term vebbr 'the right of the people'. The former term Bericovian is also a term for the mythical 'tribe' of unity, Berycovvor.
