The Airports of Anserisa are one of the main infrastructure of transportation owned and operated by the Government of Anserisa and one of the main infrastructures to get to and from Anserisa.

The first airport to be developed was the Princia-Geneva—Brantavilla International Airport, located on the outskirts of the capital Brantavilla. Other airports were developed after, first at the two major cities on the other islands and finally the other airports. Only one airport has no paved road, consisting only of pierced steel planking, the Potissima Municipal Airport.

History

Airport construction in Anserisa started in 1956 with the first airstrip being located near the capital of Brantavilla. It was a small airstrip of about 1,500 metres that allowed for small regional travel to the other Rainbow Islands nations and within the islands of Anserisa.

Other airstrips began appearing, especially near Concordia and Vexilla but soon near other municipalities like Céruléa and Chevrona.

With the rapid development of aviation, the Government of Anserisa stepped in and restricted the construction of private airstrips which had started to be build around the nation and President Martino Gallum nationalized the construction and operation of all existing airstrips and airports.

By 1961, the city of Brantavilla was growing and soon was about to surround the 1956 airstrip. The decision was to install a two-runways airport in the northern part of the city, which was undeveloped, near the border with the municipality of Fuga. The new airport opened in 1968 and has never changed since. Calls to renovate and relocate the airport near the highway between Fuga and Geneva which would be leaving place for more development of the capital have since been growing.

Some airports were destroyed like the one in Gubernata in favour of building one in Aliquéta with a small runway that was finished short, due to lack of funding, thus the airport has yet to fulfil the promise of delivering fast travels to the northern part of Branta Island.

The construction of the Vexilla-Opuso National Airport in 1989 proved to be controversial, instead of rebuilding and airport north of the city, the location chosen was to build it near the small village of Opuso which was populated by around 2000 people. The noise of the airport has made the population drop to the 900 people living in the village today.

The oldest airport still in operation today, is the Potissima Municipal Airport which has a pierced steel planking runway with some installations for refuelling. It can still accommodate some propeller planes but not modern planes. It has been inscribed to the Heritage Sites Registry of Anserisa. It is also home of the annual Classic Aircrafts International Exhibition.

Operation

All the airports in Anserisa are owned and operated by the Government of Anserisa. Airlines are the main source of revenue for the airports and all the airports are profitable, even the municipal ones which are only staffed for some days of the weeks and not full-time like the international or national airports.

It is forbidden to fly commercial planes near major population centres during the night, between 1:00am and 5:00am local time. This has led to some interpretation with commercial planes being authorized to fly out of Vexilla-Opuso National Airport, in the direction of Vexilla, while Opuso is a small village of 900 people, Vexilla is a city of 60 000 people. Since the incident, many airports stopped authorizing commercial planes to fly at night but allow small aircrafts to fly regional routes within the country.

Military

The Anserisan Air Force is operating from some mixed-operations airports in Anserisa. The Comto-Marcello—Concordia National Airport, the Chevrona Regional Airport and the Concilio-Vergobreta Municipal Airport all have contracts with the Air Force to have priority over passenger traffic. This has caused trouble mostly over the airport in Concordia because of its importance for Haliétusa Island. Plans to build a military specific airport or a mixed-operated airport near Statera and Verbéra is being examined.

National Airport System

The National Airport System is the national classification made by the Secretariat of Air Transportation to classified the airports.

International Airports

To be classified as an international airport, the airport must qualify with having a minimum of two runways of sufficient length to accommodate wide-body aircrafts. To this date, only one airport qualifies for the certification. Plans to expand the runway of the Vexilla-Opuso National Airport have been discussed, especially because of the tourism industry located on Rubecula Island.

National Airports

To be classified as an national airport, the airport must meet the requirements of being able to handle high traffic of planes, have a runway of sufficient length to accommodate wide-body aircrafts and to be located near a population centre of more than 20 000 people. To this date, only two airports qualifies for the certification. The Chevrona Regional Airport is one of the other airports that could qualify for such certification.

Municipal Airports

All other airports that can accommodate small-body aircrafts are classified as being municipal airports. The Chevrona Regional Airport, despite its name is a municipal airport. There is only one airport that is classified as a municipal airport that cannot accommodate modern planes and it is the Potissima Municipal Airport, because of its pierced steel planking runway. Plans to build a new airport, especially near the much larger municipality of Libério are being examined.
